Harper’s Revives Folio Section with John le Carré Excerpt

Harper’s Magazine has revised its Folio section, printing the first chapter novelist John le Carré‘s A Delicate Truth. The magazine also published Afterword by the great spy novelist.

The series began in 1992 with “Pafko at the Wall” by Don DeLillo. In a publisher’s note, John R. MacArthur shared a bit of history about the Folio section, adding some editorial history about fears for long form writing in magazines. Check it out:

Like many things in the history of Harper’s, Folio was conjured from a mix of editorial vision and practical necessity. When Tina Brown was appointed editor of The New Yorker in June 1992, I assumed she would begin running much shorter pieces. Harper’s response, I told Lewis Lapham, Michael Pollan, and Gerry Marzorati at a hastily organized lunch, should be from time to time to run much longer pieces that might not only satisfy the cravings of frustrated New Yorker readers but also accommodate Harper’s contributors who simply needed more space to say what they wanted to say … We’re still committed to concision, of course, but in this age of web-driven snippets, we believe there’s all the more need for writers to be able to think in depth and at sufficient length to tell complex stories.

World Book Night to Give Away One Million Books

On March 5, 2011, 20,000 givers will help donate one million books to U.K. readers for World Book Night.

Jamie Byng, Canongate Books managing director and World Book Night committee chairman, conceived the event back in 2009. A group of booksellers, librarians, authors, broadcasters and others have chosen a list of 25 books to give away (the complete list follows below). Only 20,000 people will be invited to give away books for the program. Prospective givers have until January 4th to sign up–they can go to the World Book Night website and explain in 100 words or less why they want to participate.

John Le Carré‘s The Spy Who Came in From the Cold made the cut, and he had this statement: “No writer can ask more than this: that his book should be handed in thousands to people who might otherwise never get to read it, and who will in turn hand it to thousands more. That his book should also pass from one generation to another as a story to challenge and excite each reader in his time–that is beyond his most ambitious dreams.”

Could Sebastian Faulks Be Authoring the Centenary Bond Novel?

MI6 News, devoted to news and opinion on all things spy-related, has been covering rumors and related information about the Ian Fleming Trust’s plans to publish an original Bond novel in the spring of 2008 to coincide with the centenary of the author’s birth. They’ve already ruled out Stephen Fry, Frederick Forsyth, John Gardner, Lee Child, John le Carré, Charlie Higson and Ken Follett and now focus on a new possible candidate: Sebastian Faulks.

What leads MI6 to its new conclusion? Both Faulks and the centenary novel bulletins have the same PR contact; the author of ENGELBY (which will be out in the US this fall) published PISTACHE, a 2003 collection of short literary parodies including a hilarious piece where Ian Fleming takes James Bond shopping. He has also critiqued Bond films for the British press, including a rather negative take on 1999′s “The World Is Not Enough”. No confirmation, but Faulks would be an interesting choice if the rumor does turn out to be true…
