According to The New York Times, the first title will be released sometime before Christmas. They will be co-authored by the political news site’s chief White House correspondent Mike Allen and Princeton University journalism professor Evan Thomas. Allen’s writing can be regularly viewed on Politico’s Playbook and Thomas has worked as a political journalist for both Time magazine and Newsweek. Executive editor Jon Meacham will edit the series.

Here’s more from the release: “[The four eBooks] will give readers an unprecedented look behind the scenes of the election in real time, providing detail, color, in-depth analysis beyond the hourly headlines and commentary, and ultimately a look at the final results, and how and why it all happened … Each book will include exclusive reporting from the campaign trail and will chronicle the campaign as it unfolds.” (via Publishers Weekly)

Executive editor Jon Meacham negotiated the deal with The Wylie Agency founder Andrew Wylie. The deal includes World English, German and Spanish languages, first serial, audio, and e-book publication rights. The publisher will release the book in 2012.

Gore gave this quote in the release: “I am delighted to be working with Jon Meacham and Random House on my next book. The appointment starts January 3rd. Meacham will both acquire and edit nonfiction titles. The editor won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for his Random House-published title,  American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House.

Random House imprint publisher Susan Kamil had this statement: “Jon will help us carry forward the Random House nonfiction publishing tradition, with a particular emphasis on works of history, biography, and religion … I look forward to working closely with Jon.”

Today Politico published a few juicy excerpts, looking at Rove’s score-settling passages. His memoir refers to a number of other political memoirists–a literary conversation within his political story. Here’s an excerpt: “I admire Colin Powell‘s many years of service to our country and I think he was a fine secretary of state. But I sensed he never felt comfortable around me because he looked down on me as a ‘politico.’”

Rove also obsesses about a brief conversation with Barack Obama about a sentence in Obama’s memoir–a story that climaxes at a 2008 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner Rove attended with Newsweek editor Jon Meacham. Here’s Rove’s take: “At the dinner, Jon sat between me and Valerie Jarrett … During the dinner, Jarrett e-mailed Obama on her BlackBerry to let him know she was breaking bread with Satan himself. He e-mailed her back and Jarrett made the mistake of showing Jon and me his reply, which was ‘Rove hates me.’ I knew Senator Obama was alluding to our run-in over the passage in his book. I asked Jarrett to tell him I wasn’t in the habit of hating people.”

National Review columnist and author Jonah Goldberg responded with a dismissive column: “some might wonder, given Newsweek’s fawning coverage of the man, whether this is the first time he’s written for Newsweek or whether this is just the first time he got a byline.” GalleyCat has always celebrated Obama’s writing credentials.
