Overall, Weiner (pictured, via)  found that out of 254 fiction reviews, nearly 60 percent of the featured books were written by men. Her long essay also counted authors reviewed multiple times by the newspaper. Follow this link to read the whole report.

Check it out: “Finally, of the works of fiction whose authors were reviewed twice (either with two full reviews, or review plus roundup) and profiled, one was a woman and ten were men. The men who received two reviews plus a profile were David Foster Wallace, Albert Brooks, Julian Barnes, Kevin Wilson, Nicholson Baker, Tom Perrotta, Russell Banks, Jeffrey Eugenides, Haruki Murakami and Allan Hollinghurst. The only woman who received two reviews plus a profile was Tea Obreht.”

Oddly enough, sales for the entire Booker longlist saw sales rose week after the announcement, proving that winning isn’t everything. Follow this link to read free samples of all the books on the longlist.

Here’s more from the release: “Looking at the sales of the entire longlist the impact following the announcement of the shortlist in week 36 is clear – combined sales of all titles jumped from 9,285 the week preceding the announcement to 21,499 the following week, an increase of 132%. The announcement of the winner has a similarly positive effect on sales. Sales of all longlist titles grew from 17,829 the week before the award announcement to 35,781 the following week, representing an increase of 101%.”

Allfrey is a publishing veteran with five years at Penguin Press and six years at Random House. Most recently, she served as senior editor at Jonathan Cape. Over the course of her career, she has edited Carmen Callil, Bettany Hughes and Julian Barnes. In addition she helmed Cape’s growing list of young African writers.
