New York Comic Con Promoter Launches New Comic Event

reedpopReedPOP, the company that puts on New York Comic Con, is launching a new comic book event called Special Edition: NYC. The first one will be held June 14-15 at Javits Center North.

The event is designed specifically for comic books, as New York Comic Con has grown beyond just comic books. The idea is for fans to connect with comics creators. “This new comic book festival will provide fans the opportunity to connect with artists, socialize with fellow collectors in a unique setting and search for those always hard to find back issues,” explains the press release. “The event is a pure celebration of comic book culture created specifically for die-hard comic book fans, creators and publishers.”

“New York Comic Con has grown to include so much more than comic books – it is the ultimate pop culture event. Special Edition: NYC will give comic book fans an intimate destination to meet with publishers and special guests,” explained Lance Fensterman, Global Senior Vice President of ReedPOP, in a statement. “Its creation is meeting consumer demand for more comic book experiences and builds upon our mission to provide fans of all kinds the very best in experiential events.” Read more

Captain Chesley Sullenberger to Appear at BookExpo America

200px-Chesley_Sullenberger_honored_crop.jpgCaptain Chesley Sullenberger will be guest of honor at this year’s BookExpo America.

The pilot who miraculously landed an airplane on the Hudson River will appear at the book festival Saturday, May 30 at 3:00 pm. Captain Sullenberger also scored a $3.2 million two-book deal with HarperCollins’ William Morrow imprint earlier this year. He will write a memoir that climaxes with his airplane landing and a book of “inspirational poems.”

Lance Fensterman, Vice President of BookExpo America, added: “Captain Sullenberger is one of those rare individuals whose character and integrity are quickly discernible by the manner in which he presents himself. He is a person who everyone wants to meet.”

BEA Forced to Cancel Bon Jovi Concert

The planned Saturday night benefit concert featuring Jon Bon Jovi and Amy Grant is no more. Book Expo America announced late yesterday that concert benefiting the Book Industry Foundation, which is comprised of the Association of American Publishers‘ (AAP) Get Caught Reading Campaign and the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) was scuttled after the concert’s main sponsor, Flying Dolphin Press, informed BEA that Bon Jovi’s forthcoming book BELIEVE was postponed indefinitely from its original November 2007 publication date. “It is with great regret that Flying Dolphin Press announces that Bon Jovi will not be performing at BEA in June,” the Random House imprint said in a statement to BEA officials.

“I cannot begin to express my regret about this development, and I apologize profusely to all our many attendees who I know were looking forward to this event,” said Lance Fensterman, Event Director for BEA. “At the same time, I also want to say that I do know that Flying Dolphin feels terribly about this and I know they approached us with the firmest conviction and every belief that Mr. Bon Jovi would perform. Unfortunately, as we all know in this business, things change fast and books do, on rare occasions, get postponed. This can sometimes be a bitter pill, especially for those of us who work in the event planning business.” When asked why the event couldn’t just proceed as scheduled with Grant, Festerman emailed back, “Grant on her own would be a big investment (financially due to staging needs) for just her (and either the publisher would have to cover that or it would come out of the charities take—neither a great option). It seemed clearer to call it, and readress it if we have the line up.”

Refunds will immediately be issued to everyone who has already purchased a ticket. Show organizers note that it is not necessary to call BEA for a refund and that all ticket holders will be notified in the next two to three weeks via email once their refund has been processed. Yet should another headliner become available, or even someone who could successfully share the bill with Grant, Festerman hinted that the show might still go on: “Our minds are very open,” he says.

BEA Announces Speakers List

BookExpo America, taking place between June 1-3 at the Javits Center, has announced that documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, comedian Stephen Colbert, novelist Khaled Hosseini and Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus will be among the many notable personalities who will be speaking at BEA this year. In announcing the lineup of guests for its well-known and popular Author Breakfast and Saturday Luncheon program, convention officials note that this year’s roster of speakers offers a broad spectrum of accomplished writers from many different fields of endeavor. “Unlike last year, when politics provided a theme for much of our programming, this year we are celebrating the writer and the book,” notes Lance Fensterman, Event Director for BEA. “This group of authors is as strong as any in recent memory at BEA and I’m exceptionally proud to present them to our audience of book lovers.”

The other speakers who will be participating in BEA’s special events programming are Alan Alda, Paul Coelho, Paul Krugman, Ian McEwan, Rosie O’Donnell, Alice Sebold, Lisa See, and Russell Simmons. Alan Greenspan was previously announced as BEA’s Conference Keynote speaker.

Greenspan to be BEA Keynote Speaker

Book Expo America has announced in a press release sent earlier today that former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan will appear as the conference’s Keynote Speaker on Friday, June 1 at 11am. He will be joined by Andrea Mitchell, Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent for NBC News (and Greenspan’s wife), who will interview Dr. Greenspan in a Q & A format. The appearance will, no doubt, help hype Greenspan’s much-buzzed-about (mostly for the gargantuan advance) book THE AGE OF TURBULENCE: ADVENTURES IN A NEW WORLD, which Penguin Press will publish on September 17.

“We are enormously honored that Dr. Greenspan has agreed to appear at BEA,” notes BEA director Lance Fensterman. “Dr. Greenspan is one of the leading figures of the latter half of the 20th Century and his insight, leadership, and impact has affected citizens in the United States and the world at large. We couldn’t be more proud to have this opportunity to host such an accomplished and respected individual and to have his name associated with BEA and our conference program.” But what GalleyCat wants to know is whether the Q&A format will bring out Greenspan’s much-satirized speech format… Meanwhile, Ron has a dollar says the name “Ayn Rand” doesn’t come up once during the entire “interview,” and even money on his saxophone prowess being mentioned.

New BEA Website Goes Live

Book Expo America, which will take place in New York between May 31 and Jun 2, has revamped its website, which went live late last week and is now fully operational. In a press release that went out yesterday, organizers highlight some of the site’s new features, including a new look, easier navigation, a blog from Show Director Lance Fensterman, “headlines from industry leading trade publications” (but so far, GalleyCat has been excluded), and My BEA, an online social networking platform that offers attendees, exhibitors, speakers and press an opportunity to create a personalized show experience.

“Our goal in creating BEA’s new web presence is so that we may serve as a more effective year-round tool in building relationships,” notes Fensterman. “My vision for BEA on the web is to create a platform that extends the reach and relevance of BookExpo America well beyond 3 days in June. Added features such as social networking, dedicated web pages to key attendee groups, and an ever expanding podcasting program are examples or our commitment to serve our industry in new and evolving ways.”

More content, in the form of a dedicated website tailored specifically to BEAs Chinese visitors and an interactive posting board called “BEA STORY” is on the way.
