Lauren Oliver Stars in the ‘How a Book is Made’ Video Series

We showed you Weldon Owen’s satirical How a Book Is Born infographic. But HarperCollins and author Lauren Oliver have created a video series showing how a book actually gets made–to pull ”back the curtain about the publishing process” for children, teachers, and aspiring writers.

We’ve embedded the first installment of this seven-part series above–what do you think? Several publishing executives and Oliver herself discuss all the behind-the-scenes details that went into creating the hit middle-grade novel, The Spindlers.

Depending on the viewers’ response, the publisher could make more of these videos featuring different authors and genres. Follow this link to view all the videos.

Have Young Adult Books Uplifted the Popularity of Short Fiction?

In recent years, young adult books have driven a surge in sales for publishers. Besides increasing the revenue streams of these companies, it also seems to have uplifted the popularity of short fiction. The YA authors who have contributed to this trend tend to set their short fiction pieces within the universe of a popular book series.

For instance, Beth Revis recently concluded the Across the Universe trilogy and celebrated by inviting her fans to download a free novella called “As They Slip Away.” Ally Carter incorporated characters from two teen series, Heist Society and the Gallagher Girls, for “Double-Crossed: A Spies and Thieves Novella.”

As we previously reported, HarperCollins established HarperTeen Impulse as a digital imprint dedicated to solely publishing short fiction. But, even before this venture came along, Divergent series author Veronica Roth penned a short story called “Free Four” and Delirium trilogy author Lauren Oliver wrote a piece called “Hana.” What do you think?

At the moment, Zurchin is fundraising on Kickstarter to cover the cost of producing this calendar.
Lauren Oliver Sells Her First Novel for Adults

YA author Lauren Oliver has sold her first adult novel to HarperCollins’ Ecco imprint. Rooms will be published in the fall of 2014.

Oliver is the 29-year-old author of Before I Fall, Delirium, Pandemonium and Liesl & Po. Fox 2000 Pictures already bought the rights to those first two books. Stephen Barbara of Foundry Literary + Media negotiated the deal with HarperCollins president Michael Morrison.

Ecco editorial director Lee Boudreaux will edit the novel, and described the book in the release: “Rooms was as instantly gripping as it was elegantly written, filled with characters and predicaments I still can’t get out of my head a week later. When I look at what Lauren has already accomplished as a writer, I’m filled with equal parts awe and amazement.” (Author photo via Jonathan Alpeyrie)

Is Dystopian Lit Still Going Strong?

The New York Times recently profiled three young-adult dystopian titles: Bumped by Megan McCafferty, Crossed by Ally Condie, and Delirium by Lauren Oliver. All of these authors have published in the past, but fans of dystopian fiction can also expect some new novels from debut authors.

The video embedded above features the book trailer for Divergent, the first book in Veronica Roth‘s dystopian trilogy. Roth describes the book as being a story about “choice and identity.” According to Publishers Weekly, Roth’s agent Joanna Stampfel-Volpe pitched it as “The Hunger Games meets The Matrix.”

Lauren DeStefano‘s Wither kicks off The Chemical Garden trilogy; it features a world where people are bound to a limited lifespan and strict marriage guidelines. In June, Elana Johnson will publish Possession. The story stars Vi, a rebellious heroine hellbent on thinking for herself. Will dystopian lit continue to rule or will Greek myths dominate?
