How to Pitch Dystel & Goderich Literary Management

With 600 clients and ten agents, Dystel & Goderich Literary Management is a bustling place to look for an agent. Mediabistro’s Pitching an Agent series interviewed founder Jane Dystel for more advice.

Dystel & Goderich Literary Management has represented many authors, including On the Island by Tracey Garvis Graves, Murder As a Fine Art by David Morrell, and a new YA series by James Dashner, Lisa McMann and Richelle Mead.

With 10 agents, including Dystel herself, DGLM is a medium-sized operation, which may be appealing to new writers. Dystel says that, while she has a reputation for being very tough with publishers, “I think my clients would say that I’m very nurturing. They all have my home phone number. I take very good care of them.”

Simon & Schuster Launches Webcam Author Interview Site

Simon & Schuster Digital partnered with VYou.com to create Ask the Author, a digital venue for readers to interact with writers. On the new site, authors respond to reader-submitted questions through webcam videos.

Participating writers with Ask the Author pages include: Chris Cleave, Brad Thor, Chuck Klosterman, and Lisa McMann. What do you think about these short video interviews?

Here’s more from the press release: “Using VYou’s innovative technology and any computer that has a webcam, authors can record responses to individual messages or questions entered by their fans. The questions and answers are then organized into ‘conversations,’ giving the experience a live feel. Participating authors can spend as much or as little time as they want on their video, which they can record at any time.”

Four Book Deal for Lisa McMann

Following the success of her YA novels “Wake” and “Fade,” Michigan-born novelist Lisa McMann just inked a four-book deal with Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing.

The deal includes world rights and audio for two young adult novels and two middle-grade novels by the popular writer. It was negotiated by Michael Bourret of Dystel and Goderich, who will also handle film rights. The first two novels will be published by Simon Pulse: “Dead to You” (a ripped from headlines story about a boy kidnapped and returned to his family after nine years) for spring 2012 and an unnamed young adult novel in spring 2013. Michael Bourret of Dystel and Goderich negotiated the deal, and is handling film rights.

Here’s more about the other two novels, from the release: “Aladdin will publish The Unwanteds, a dystopian middle-grade fantasy novel about kids who are exiled from their homeland when they display signs of creativity to a hidden world where they are trained to use their abilities and hone their magical skills, in hardcover in fall 2011 with a paperback edition in fall 2012, and a yet-to-be titled middle grade novel in hardcover in fall 2012 and paperback in fall 2013.”
