Freddie Mercury Biography To Be Updated & Revised

In a pre-London Book Fair auction, publisher Hodder and Stoughton has acquired the world rights to an updated and revised version of Freddie Mercury: The Definitive Biography authored by Lesley-Ann Jones. Although an exact number was not revealed, the deal is reportedly worth “high five-figures.”

According to The Bookseller, nonfiction editor Hannah Black negotiated the deal, securing world rights, with Mulcahy Conway Associates literary agent Ivan Mulcahy. A publication date has been set for 2012 to synchronize with the release of the Freddie Mercury biopic starring Sacha Baron-Cohen as Queen’s lead singer.

Jones (pictured, via) released the original version of her Freddie Mercury biography with Hodder and Stoughton in 1997. In the past, she has also written titles profiling pop star Kylie Minogue and supermodel Naomi Campbell.

Publishing Industry Results from LBF

IBS Industries surveyed publishing professionals at the London Book Fair and has published their results. More than 200 publishers provided insight into the industry and 56% cited the creation and management of distribution channels as a major concern for publishers. Maintaining profitability was also key with 48% rating this as a key concern.

In terms of change, more than half considered Print on Demand a major issue for the future and something that all publishers need to embrace to ensure future success. Similarly, eBooks and the sale of digital content rated highly with 28% and 45% of publishers considering these the most important changes for the future. However, the industry is upbeat with 61% saying their main objective for the current year is to increase revenue. In addition, 43% claim the need to increase efficiency as similarly important.

Mike Irving, VP of Publishing for IBS commented, “Most publishers are looking to achieve growth in the coming year – but in a changing business environment it is those that also reduce operating costs that will be most successful. We are very interested to see what is making the industry tick and look forward to working closely with existing and potential customers to help them achieve these business aims.”

Dateline LBF: Industry and Blogosphere Reactions

Simon Trewin: “After the terrible experiences of the 2006 London Book Fair at ExCel in Docklands where nothing seemed to go right at all it was a joy to return to West London for what many attendees agree was the best fair ever.”

Macmillan president Richard Charkin‘s two dispatches are colorful and detail-laden but most notable for the following observation: “. My back-of-an-envelope calculations suggest that the elimination of all trade book fairs (LBF, BEA, Bologna, Delhi, Guadalajara, Tokyo, Cape Town etc) might reduce total industry costs by several billion dollars.” Makes more that “just a boy” think…

Ali Karim describes the peculiar sensation of meeting Dean Koontz via the LongPen. Karim also provided the video at the top of this post (along with other video captures of John Banville‘s noir panel.)

London Book Fair Preview

Just like last year, GalleyCat will be all over the London Book Fair, even if neither Ron nor I will actually be able to attend in person (oh, to have larger budget purse-strings at our disposal…) But for those who are attending, we welcome and in fact implore you to send in your best news, views, gossip and especially pictures of the action at Earls’ Court from April 16 to 18.

The Independent previews some of the best offerings, including how the LBF is, for the first time, opening itself up to the public with two events featuring Tracy Chevalier, Margaret Atwood and Andrew O’Hagan. “The trade is at the heart of our fair, but we recognised that the public is interested in the book world. For the first time we have teamed up with the Southbank Centre,” said exhibition manager Emma House.
