Lauren Oliver Sells Her First Novel for Adults

YA author Lauren Oliver has sold her first adult novel to HarperCollins’ Ecco imprint. Rooms will be published in the fall of 2014.

Oliver is the 29-year-old author of Before I Fall, Delirium, Pandemonium and Liesl & Po. Fox 2000 Pictures already bought the rights to those first two books. Stephen Barbara of Foundry Literary + Media negotiated the deal with HarperCollins president Michael Morrison.

Ecco editorial director Lee Boudreaux will edit the novel, and described the book in the release: “Rooms was as instantly gripping as it was elegantly written, filled with characters and predicaments I still can’t get out of my head a week later. Calvert Morgan Named Publisher of It Books

Cal Morgan has been named senior vice president and publisher of HarperCollins’ It Books imprint.

Morgan will also oversee the Harper Design imprint team and continue to serve as editorial director of the Harper Perennial original paperback program. He will report to Michael Morrison.

You can follow Morgan on Twitter. He began his career at Macmillan’s St. Martin’s Press. After joining HarperCollins in 1999, he worked at several imprints including ReganBooks, Harper and William Morrow. He has worked with Neil StraussLauren RednissJerry Lee Lewis, Kelly Oxford, Stanley Crouch, Arianna HuffingtonMichael Moore and Ralph Nader.

HarperStudio Imprint to Close; Staff Moves to Other Imprints

harperStudioHeader.jpgToday HarperCollins announced that HarperStudio will close, ending one of publishing’s most experimental projects. The final titles will be published in the Summer 2010 list.

Titles scheduled beyond that date will be picked up by other HarperCollins imprints. According to a memo from from Michael Morrison–the company’s president and publisher of U.S. General Books and Canada–the publisher is willing to discuss “profit sharing scenarios on a book by book basis” with authors who appreciated HarperStudio’s unorthodox publishing strategy. The imprint’s publisher left last month, making the imprint’s future uncertain. Last month, Gawker wondered what the change could mean for bloggers with book deals.

Here’s more from the memo: “I’m happy to report that Debbie Stier, Associate Publisher of HarperStudio and Director of Digital Marketing for HarperCollins, will continue in her role as Director of Digital Marketing for the company reporting to Carolyn Pittis. Debbie will also continue to acquire books for all imprints as Editor-at-Large. Kathryn Ratcliffe-Lee will continue to report to Debbie. I’m pleased to announce that Senior Editor Julia Cheiffetz will move to the Harper imprint and report to Jonathan Burnham. Assistant Editor Katie Salisbury will continue to report to Julia. Jessica Wiener will continue as Director of Marketing, reporting to me.”

Michael Morrison to Helm HarperStudio After Bob Miller’s Departure

harperStudioHeader.jpgToday HarperCollins CEO Brian Murray announced that Michael Morrison–the company’s president and publisher of U.S. General Books and Canada–will lead HarperStudio after the departure of current publisher Bob Miller in May.

Murray had this statement: “At a time of great change in publishing, Bob built HarperStudio into a new innovative publishing imprint based on profit shares with authors and non returnable book sales with retailers. It was recently named one of the most innovative companies by Fast Company magazine … I thank Bob for his contributions to HarperCollins and ask you to join me in wishing Bob much success in his new role.”

As we reported earlier, Miller will head to Workman Publishing as Group Publisher–supervising Workman, Algonquin, and Artisan imprints alongside Workman CEO Peter Workman.

Reganbooks Dismantling: “From Day 1, we knew we could not be continuing with that name”

The NYT’s Julie Bosman follows up last night’s breaking story with more details on the impending shutdown of ReganBooks a little more than a month after its creator, Judith Regan, was fired. Aside from the five staffers named yesterday who will move back to HarperCollins‘ New York headquarters, the publisher also laid off 10 employees in ReganBooks’ LA offices. The 10 employees were notified yesterday that they would be laid off, said Michael Morrison, the president and group publisher of HarperMorrow, a division of HarperCollins, in a telephone interview with Bosman. “From Day 1, we knew we could not be continuing with that name. We didn’t want to, nor could we.” Morrison added that none of the ReganBooks authors had yet been notified of the imprint’s closing – but they sure know now.

Regan also issued a statement about her namesake imprint’s closing, saying she was “blessed to have the opportunity to work with hundreds of fascinating authors over the years and honored to have published them under my name.” Such magnanimous words were a far cry from comments made about Newsweek’s OJ Simpson article on her namesake Sirius satellite radio show, as Radar‘s Jeff Bercovici reported. When Regan’s producer, Howie Green, slipped up and said the chapter recounted “how [Simpson] would have committed the crime,” Regan snapped at him. “No, it was how he committed the crime. Even today the mistakes the media made have been repeated by you, my producer, because it is so inundated, so insidious.”
