John Fogerty Lands Book Deal for Memoir

The former Creedence Clearwater Revival lead singer will talk about his time in one of rock music’s most memorable bands, writing songs like “Proud Mary” and “Bad Moon Rising,” but he will also talk about his ongoing work as a solo artist. Publisher Michael Pietsch acquired the book and executive editor John Parsley will edit. Here’s more from the release:

His solo career includes the album Centerfield, as well as Grammy Award–winning records and award-winning tours … Fogerty will write about the pressures of sudden fame, his tumultuous relationships with his bandmates—including his brother, Tom—and his long and costly battle for creative freedom from his record label, a battle that was taken all the way to the Supreme Court. Crushed by how the record label victimized him, he was forced to walk away from it all while they were the number one band in the world.

J.K. Rowling to Publish First Adult Novel

J.K. Rowling has inked a deal with Little, Brown Book Group and Little, Brown and Company to publish her first novel for adults. The publisher did not reveal the title or publication date, but the novel will be published in print and eBook formats.

Little, Brown Book Group publisher David Shelley will edit and publish for UK readers and Little, Brown and Company executive vice president Michael Pietsch will publish in the United States.

Rowling had this statement in the release: “Although I’ve enjoyed writing it every bit as much, my next book will be very different to the Harry Potter series, which has been published so brilliantly by Bloomsbury and my other publishers around the world. The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry’s success has brought me, and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher. I am delighted to have a second publishing home in Little, Brown, and a publishing team that will be a great partner in this new phase of my writing life.”

Elton John to Publish Book About AIDS Epidemic

Rock star Elton John has landed a book deal with Little, Brown for his first book, Love Is the Cure: Ending the Global AIDS Epidemic. He explained in the release: “This is a disease that must be cured not by a miraculous vaccine, but by changing hearts and minds, and through a collective effort to break down social barriers and to build bridges of compassion.”

Scheduled to be published in July, the proceeds will raise money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Williams & Connolly LLP attorney Robert Barnett negotiated the deal and Little, Brown publisher Michael Pietsch will edit.

Here’s more about the book: “LOVE IS THE CURE will be the very personal story of Sir Elton’s life during the AIDS epidemic, including his agony at seeing friend after friend perish needlessly. Through his stories of close encounters with people like Ryan White, Freddie Mercury, and many others, he will convey the personal toll AIDS has taken on his life—and his infinite determination to stop its spread.”

Iraq War Veteran Kevin Powers Inks Deal with Little, Brown and Company

Veteran soldier Kevin Powers has inked a deal with Little, Brown and Company for his Iraq war novel The Yellow Birds.

Powers, who has served in the Iraq war, is currently working towards an MFA as a Michener Fellow in Poetry at the University of Texas at Austin. Powers’ manuscript was acquired by publisher Michael Pietsch.

Pietsch had this statement in the release: “Ever since reading Ernest Hemingway’s In Our Time I have been gripped by novelists’ accounts of the experience of war. And as soon as I began reading The Yellow Birds I knew I was in the presence of a masterful rendering of the particular horrors of this particular war. From the first word of this novel to the last, Kevin Powers’s portrayal of young soldiers trying to stay alive—and of the effect of the war on their families at home—is profound, unsettling, and sadly beautiful.”

Publisher Michael Pietsch had this comment: “[I]t is with deep regret that we have published a book that we can no longer stand behind … Our goal is to never have this happen, but when it does, it is important to us to communicate with and compensate readers and retailers as quickly as possible.”

The $1.99 eBook will expand the magazine’s story about Chad Harbach‘s $665,000 book deal.

Here’s more from the release: “[The book] tells the riveting story behind the publication of Chad Harbach’s highly anticipated debut novel, which is being released in hardcover and digital form on September 7, 2011. As author and n+1 co-founder Keith Gessen reveals in this 19,000-word e-book (expanded from his article ‘The Book on Publishing,’ appearing in the October issue of Vanity Fair), the passage from first draft to national book tour can be a treacherous, absorbing—and wildly unpredictable—adventure.”

Written by Harbach’s co-editor at N+1, the eBook follows the novel’s entire journey from MFA class to publication. It will include stories about Gernert Company agent Chris Parris-Lamb, Little, Brown editor Michael Pietsch and book designer Keith Hayes.

Editors Buzz Forums: Battle of the Blurbs

In a BEA tradition yesterday, six editors described their favorite book of the season in the annual Editors Buzz Forum. For ten minutes apiece, these editors advocated for a particular book in a room filled with booksellers.

The annual event can teach you a lot about writing blurbs, particularly how to write one or two glittering sentences about a book. We’ve included a few choice examples below–how would you describe your favorite book in a single, perfect sentence?

“It’s huge but familiar at the same time.” Little, Brown and Company publisher Michael Pietsch on The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach

“It gave me goosebumps. On my face.” Dutton senior editor Denise Roy on The Underside of Joy by Sere Prince Halverson

Bob Mould Autobiography Goes To Little Brown

Michael Pietsch, Publisher of Little, Brown and Company, announced today that rock legend Bob Mould, founder of the pioneering American punk band Husker Du, will write his memoir for publication in autumn 2010. Michael Azerrad, author of the bestselling Our Band Could Be Your Life and Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana will collaborate with Mould to tell the full story of his blazing, era-defining life and career.

Guitarist, singer, and songwriter Bob Mould founded the trio Husker Du in Minneapolis in 1979 and his memoir will delve deeply into his life as a musician, as a solo artist, and in his most commercially viable and successful work as leader of ’90s indie rock kingpins Sugar. He will also tell the story of his other lives, including his internal struggle with his sexuality, the coming-out process, and his subsequent embrace of, and service to, the LGBT community; his work as a creative consultant / director in the world of pro wrestling; his work as a record producer, including seminal projects by Soul Asylum and Magnapop; and his foray into electronic / dance music, including the popular BLOWOFF club events held nationwide.

Bob Mould said:

For many years, people have asked if and when I would write my autobiography. I have always looked forward to this point in time, where I could tell my stories, to answer the many questions about the music and the lifestyle, and how they inform the creative process. I have not been alone on this ride: friends and foes, mentors and associates, peers, lovers, all traveling by my side. The ride so far has been incredible, and I hope to do my memory right in documenting the journey.

“The gorgeous rage of Bob Mould’s music seemed like the best possible response to the Reagan ’80s for many music-loving young Americans,” says Michael Pietsch. “To hear firsthand what it was like to make that music, and to build the indie rock world that eventually brought us REM, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Green Day, and much of modern rock, is something that music lovers have awaited for years.”

Bob Mould was represented in the negotiation by his lawyer, Josh Grier of Dreier LLP, and by literary agent Dave Dunton of the Harvey Klinger Agency. Michael Azerrad was represented by agent Lydia Wills of the Paradigm Agency.

According to Billboard Magazine:

In addition, Mould has finished his next solo album, which will be released in March 2009 by Anti-. The follow-up to this year’s “District Line” is “a guitar album,” he writes on his blog, adding that he will tour with a full band in support of it next spring.
