Colin Harrison Promoted to EIC of Scribner

Simon & Schuster has promoted Colin Harrison to VP, editor-in-chief of its Scribner imprint.

Harrison has spent 11 years at the publisher, but he has also written seven novels, including Break and Enter, Manhattan Nocturne and Risk. At Scribner, he worked on many books, including Sam Gwynne’s Empire of the Summer Moon, Doug Stanton’s Horse Soldiers and Dan Okrent‘s Last Call. Previously, he had served as deputy editor at Harper’s.

Here’s more from publisher Nan Graham‘s memo: “Colin has brought prestige and profitability to the house. He began with a bang, acquiring Anthony Swofford’s Jarhead the week before he was officially employed, and went on to publish a range of stellar titles from the mega-New York Times bestseller Inside of a Dog to literary gems by Ron Hansen, and Carol Sklenicka’s Raymond Carver … His alliances with colleagues in all departments at Simon & Schuster, his eloquence, conviction and savvy when launching a book, his teacher’s instincts, and his solidarity with our staff make him an ideal Editor-in-Chief for Scribner.”

Nan Graham Named Publisher of Scribner Imprint

Stephen King’s longtime editor Nan Graham has been promoted to publisher and senior VP of Simon & Schuster’s Scribner imprint.

Graham has spent 18 years at the imprint, working with authors that included Don DeLillo, Miranda July, Frank McCourt, Annie Proulx, and Colm Toibin. Scribner Publishing Group president Susan Moldow had this statement in the release:

“As if Nan hadn’t amply proven how deserved this promotion is by her firm hand in shaping the list and staff and insuring the growth of the Scribner imprint over the last eighteen years, her performance of late surely demonstrates that she continues to exercise her singular editorial instincts, abilities, and leadership qualities at the highest levels.”

Alice Hoffman To Publish Next Novel with Scribner

Alice Hoffman has inked a deal to publish her next novel with Simon & Schuster’s Scribner imprint. The Dovekeepers will be released on October 4th. THE DOVEKEEPERS on October 4, 2011.

Publisher Susan Moldow and editor-in-chief Nan Graham acquired the book. The deal was negotiated by Elaine Markson of the Markson Thoma Literary Agency. Graham will edit. Last month, Hoffman (pictured, via) published The Red Garden with Random House’s Crown Books imprint.

Here’s more about the book, from the release: “Set in ancient Israel, THE DOVEKEEPERS richly imagines the Romans’ siege of Masada, one of the most significant events in Jewish history. Five years in the writing, THE DOVEKEEPERS has already been hailed by Toni Morrison as ‘a major contribution to twenty-first century literature.’”

Anjelica Huston Lands Book Deal for Memoir

Actress Anjelica Huston has inked a book deal with Scribner for her memoir. Publication is set for 2013. “I want to look back at the landscapes that formed me—the exceptional highs and lows I have experienced,” the actress (pictured, via Robert Fleischauer) explained in the release.

Senior vice president Nan Graham acquired the book and will edit. Bill Clegg from William Morris Endeavor negotiated the deal. Simon & Schuster U.K. will simultaneously publish the memoir in England.

Here’s more about the book: “Written by the Oscar-winning actress herself, the memoir will recount her storied life and career, including her childhood in Ireland, her parents’ distant marriage, her complicated relationship with her father, actor and director John Huston, the tragic death of her mother Enrica Soma, her appearances in films such as Prizzi’s Honor and The Grifters, her years with Jack Nicholson, and her marriage to the artist Robert Graham.”

9/11 Novels Don’t Stack Up to Non-Fiction

USA Today’s Bob Minzesheimer compares numbers on fiction and non-fiction published since 9/11 that happen to focus in some way upon the event. 1,036 non-fiction titles – most notably the 9/11 COMMISSION REPORT – have found their way to bookstores in the past six years according to Books in Print, with a mere 30 fiction titles available. The Book Report’s Carol Fitzgerald says fiction can’t compete with the “visual images that dominate our memories. We don’t need to create stories around the event. There were enough stories there from the start.” Scribner editor Nan Graham says sales are “fantastic for serious literary fiction” such as her own FALLING MAN by Don DeLillo and she expects more, especially if it’s taught in college courses. She’s not surprised readers were attracted by non-fiction to try to answer questions: “What happened? Could it have been avoided?” Fiction “comes later as people ask, ‘How has it changed the way we think and act and remember?’
