Wangari Maathai Has Died

Writer Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, has passed away. She was 71-years-old.

According to the AFP, Maathai (pictured, via) founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental-activist group, in 1977. Her work provided the inspiration for several books including The Green Belt Movement: sharing the approach and the experience (1985), The Canopy of Hope: My Life Campaigning for Africa, Women, and the Environment (2002) and Unbowed: A Memoir (2006).

In an interview with Time , she explained how her work helps to promote peace: “We are sharing our resources in a very inequitable way. We have parts of the world that are very deprived and parts of the world that are very rich. And that is partly the reason why we have conflict.”

Al Gore Inks Deal with Random House

Former vice president Al Gore (pictured, via) has signed with Random House to publish a not-yet-titled book on “the political, social and economic forces that are shaping what America and the world will become in ensuing decades.”

Executive editor Jon Meacham negotiated the deal with The Wylie Agency founder Andrew Wylie. The deal includes World English, German and Spanish languages, first serial, audio, and e-book publication rights. The publisher will release the book in 2012.

Gore gave this quote in the release: “I am delighted to be working with Jon Meacham and Random House on my next book. With this new work, I hope to help start a conversation about the large-scale drivers of change that are defining and shaping our future—from the rapid development and integration of radically new technologies to the planet-changing impact of the climate crisis, to poverty, globalization, and the democratization of knowledge accompanying the emergence of a ubiquitous Internet linking ever more intelligent devices.”

Nobel Prize Winning Authors Who Didn’t Win for Lit

This year’s Nobel Prize in Literature went to Mario Vargas Llosa who beat the odds and captured the tax-free $2 million award. The Huffington Post rounded-up seven authors who have won the Nobel prize in categories other than literature.

The winners include Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, Martin Luther King Jr., Elie Wiesel, James D. Watson, and Joseph Stiglitz. In 1993, Mandela shared the prize with Frederik Willem de Klerk for their work towards ending apartheid. Mandela has also published his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom. Last year, Obama was honored with the prize; he has written three books: Dreams of My Father, The Audacity of Hope, and the forthcoming picture book, Of Thee I Sing.

Chinese author Liu Xiaobo joined this inspirational group, winning this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. The judges honored the writer “for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China.”
