Oprah Winfrey and Frank Sinatra biographer Kitty Kelley has landed a book deal to write about the women of the U.S. Senate. Publication has been set for Spring 2016.

The book will look at the 113th Congress, but focus on the “divinely diverse and one-fifth female” U.S. Senate. WSK Management CEO Wayne Kabak negotiated the deal with publisher Jamie Raab. Raab will also edit the book.

Kelley explained in the release: “As a woman who cheers the accomplishments of other women on both sides of the aisle, I come to this project with a positive bias, and I am eager to learn if the combined talents and collegiality of women will make a difference in the way our laws are made and the country’s business is conducted. More importantly, through in-depth reporting I will try to answer the question that so many are asking: can the presence of women break the ugly gridlock now choking Congress?”

Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary Adds ‘Mashup’ & ‘e-reader’

Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary has added ten new words to its 2012 edition: “f-bomb,” ”aha moment,” ”man cave,” “sexting,” “gastropub,” “e-reader,” “bucket list,” “earworm,” “game changer” and “mashup.”

In the past 24 hours, “f-bomb,” “sexting” and “man cave” were among the most frequently looked up words on the dictionary’s website. Some of these words have been circulating within the English-speaking population for decades.

The Daily Beast reported the earliest citation for “aha moment” came from a 1939 psychology text. The phrase’s popularity was propelled by Oprah Winfrey and her talk show.

Oprah Winfrey Relaunches Her Book Club with ‘Wild’ by Cheryl Strayed

Oprah Winfrey has relaunched her book club, celebrating Wild by Cheryl Strayed in a video (embedded above) about “Book Club 2.0.” Her announcement has already earned 16,000 “likes” on Facebook.

The New York Times broke the news last week with a Winfrey video and story. “I was reading this book. As a real book. Holding up the book. I was on the edge of my seat reading the book and I was like, ‘Where is The Oprah Winfrey Show when you need to announce and tell everybody about this book? I need the book club.’ So I created Book Club 2.0 for this book, Wild by Cheryl Strayed!” cheered Winfrey, waving the book in a video presentation.

The new club will feature social media components, annotated eBooks and be tied in with Winfrey’s cable station.

Jacquelyn Mitchard to Head YA Imprint at F+W Media

Novelist Jacquelyn Mitchard has joined F+W Media as the head of their new young adult fiction imprint, Merit Press Books. The imprint will release five titles this year and has thirteen books slated for 2013.

Oprah Winfrey selected Mitchard’s 1996 novel, The Deep End of the Ocean, as the first title to kick off her famous Book Club. Mitchard has written both fiction and nonfiction, publishing books for adult, young adult and children’s readers.

Mitchard gave this statement in the release: “I’d wanted to be an editor for years, but didn’t see myself in a huge box in Manhattan. F+W made me an offer I couldn’t refuse: the chance to work with new authors and established authors on something so important. It’s exactly where I want to be at this point in my career. Something in me said – you’re home.” (Photo Credit: James Schnepf)

Madonna To Star in Comic Book

Madonna has had a pretty colorful life, and pretty soon you’ll be able to see it in full color. Independent publisher Bluewater Productions has a new comic book coming out in August based on the star’s life.

Female Force: Madonna is the illustrated story of the star’s life as written by CW Cooke and drawn by Michael Johnson. The book tells the story of how a struggling dancer in New York became one of the biggest pop stars in history. The book also highlights Madonna’s influence on other artists. “Most pop stars owe everything to this woman. It’s amazing all of the things that she’s done in her lifetime, and I have a feeling that this is still only the beginning,” stated Cooke.

Bluewater’s Female Force series featured other prominent women, including: Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, JK Rowling, Ellen Degeneres and Sarah Palin.

Oprah Winfrey Closes Her TV Book Club

To commemorate the end of The Oprah Winfrey Show after 25 years, the Nielsen Company compiled a list of the top ten bestselling books from Oprah Winfrey‘s magical book club over the last ten years.

We’ve included the complete chart below–Eckhart Tolle topped the list, selling more than 3.3 million copies of A New Earth.

Here’s more from the release: “Oprah’s seal of approval, manifested in Oprah’s Book Club, translates to new editions, heightened attention and sales bumps (or jumps, as was sometimes the case). Oprah’s Book Club—with picks ranging from older classics to lesser known works to Pulitzer Prize-winners—became a coveted and exclusive fraternity founded in 1996, with branded special editions selling more than 22 million copies in the past ten years.”

James Frey Will Return To Oprah Winfrey’s Show

Novelist James Frey will return to Oprah Winfrey‘s television show for the first time since she criticized him onstage for fabrications in his memoir, A Million Little Pieces.

Frey (pictured, via) has just self-published his new novel, The Final Testament of the Holy Bible.

The NY Post has the scoop from an anonymous source: “Oprah apologized to James a couple of years ago, and he appreciated it. So he agreed to go back on her show and talk about everything that’s happened over the last five years.”

Black History Month Books

As February comes to an end, people who have already read The Autobiography of Malcolm X and My Bondage and My Freedom might need more book suggestions for Black History Month. Bluewater Productions has released a comic collection called Black History: Leaders to celebrate.

Here’s more from the press release: “The 96-page anthology includes the unabridged issues featuring Barack Obama, Colin Powell, Oprah Winfrey, and Condoleezza Rice. These biographies were previously published as individual issues of Bluewater’s biographical comic titles Female Force and Political Power.”

Flashlight Worthy released a book list by Denise Fawcett Facey entitled: “Books About African Americans That Aren’t Just for Black History Month.” Below, we’ve recommended more titles. What books are you reading to celebrate Black History Month?

Oprah Winfrey’s Double Dickens Book Club Pick

Oprah Winfrey picked a classic double header for her latest book club selection, choosing Charles Dickens‘ Great Expectations and A Tale of Two Cities.

During her announcement, Winfrey noted: “I’m going old, old school … Normally I only choose books that I have read, but I must shamefully admit to you all that I have never read Dickens.”

Winfrey will use Penguin’s new $20 paperback containing both books and nearly 800 pages. Amazon noted yesterday they have free Kindle editions of both titles. Penguin offers a $7.99 digital edition that includes illustrations, author background, and historical information.

Daniel Radcliffe Unlikely to Play Harry Potter Again

“I think 10 years is a long time to spend with one character,” said Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe, making it clear he would probably not play the wizard if J.K. Rowling published more books.

During her Oprah Winfrey interview earlier this year, Rowling surprised Harry Potter fans when she noted: “I definitely could write an eighth, ninth, tenth book. I could, easily.” In the video embedded above from 2009, Radcliffe and cast mate Rupert Grint talked about the film.

More recently, Radcliffe reacted with surprise at Rowling’s revelation. He told Sky News: “Oh God, she promised me categorically that there wouldn’t be another book involving Harry … I think 10 years is a long time to spend with one character.”
