Random House marketing director Avideh Bashirrad explained in the release: “We’ve seen increased demand for digital content from book clubs, so we developed a program that would offer them more of what they love. Kathy Patrick was our ideal choice for the partnership since she has been an advocate of our books for many years.”

The first two shows aired on January 14th with Karen Abbott‘s American Rose and Paula McLain‘s The Paris Wife. Patrick founded the Pulpwood Queens Book Club, a group with 400 chapters across the country. Other authors who will appear on the new show include: Pat Conroy, Fannie Flagg, Helen Simonson, Deborah Rodriguez, Frank Delaney, Yann Martel, Janelle Brown, Melanie Benjamin, Susan Vreeland, and Lisa See. Many were surprised to see Jonathan Franzen‘s critically acclaimed novel Freedom did not make the cut.  In a pleasant fiction surprise, Karen Tei Yamashita‘s I Hotel earned a nomination for  indie publisher, Coffee House Press.

According to Publishers Lunch, the author of “The Prince of Tides” recently had surgery and had to cancel. Publishers Weekly reports that Mary Karr and Richard Russo will replace the author in his two scheduled events.

The Lunch article included this statement from his agent, Marly Rusoff: “Conroy communicates that he is recovering from surgery, and ‘otherwise he would be at BEA, which he has always loved attending. He especially regrets being unable to sign with his daughter, Melissa Conroy, who has her first book out, in which he is a character.’”

When Ripley’s book did so well, a second sequel seemed a slam-dunk and St. Martin’s originally commissioned Emma Tennant to write it in 1995 with the caveat that she stay true to Mitchell’s tone, vision and characters. But her finished manuscript was rejected on the grounds it was “too British in tone”, so she was fired and legally prohibited from ever publishing her manuscript. Talks then began with Pat Conroy but his quest for editorial freedom clashed with the estate and publisher’s ideas. Four years had passed and nothing had happened until editor Hope Dellon walked into a bookstore and found one of McCaig’s novels.

Following up on a follow-up inevitably has its challenges. “I’m almost certain that there’s going to be people who really have a bone to pick with GONE WITH THE WIND who are going to take it out on this,” McCaig said. “There’s going to be adoring fans who find places where I distorted the true meaning of the original. And there’s going to be some people who think it’s a pretty good book.”
