Paul McCartney’s Pro-Library and Anti-Bush Comments Cut by PBS

According to Mediaite, when PBS airs a television special about Paul McCartney‘s White House performance in June, they will cut the 20-second clip embedded above–where McCartney criticizes the library skills of former President George W. Bush.

At a ceremony where he was awarded the the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song by President Barack Obama, the former Beatle concluded: “After the last eight years, it’s good to have a president that knows what a library is.”

Libraries have made headlines for the last month, as we spotlighted library card art, found the best library feeds on Twitter, and highlighted the Old Spice guy’s love for libraries.
Michael Jackson and His Books

When the sad news broke that pop singer Michael Jackson had died, GalleyCat assembled links to three books the pop legend left behind.

His longest book was “Moonwalk” in 1988, and the jacket copy summarizes his climb to stardom and his struggles: “He recalls a childhood that was both harsh and joyful, the transformation of the Jackson Five into worldwide stardom, his sometimes difficult relationships with his family, and the inspiration and drive behind his music. He also talks about show-business friends such as Diana Ross, Paul McCartney, Fred Astaire and Marlon Brando, and about his decision to have extensive plastic surgery.”

This GalleyCat editor fondly recalls checking out “Moonwalker: The Storybook” at the library around 1988, a book where Jackson fights an evil drug-peddler, Mr. Big. In 1992, Jackson wrote “Dancing the Dream,” a collection of twenty poems and twenty essays about “world hunger, homeless children, and the need for world peace.”

Paul McCartney’s Book-of-the-Month

What does Paul McCartney listen to while touring America? Audiobooks.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that the ex-member of The Beatles tripped out over an audiobook version of Charles Bock‘s critically-acclaimed novel, “Beautiful Children,” during a desert road trip. If you want to read more about Bock, GalleyCat interviewed the author earlier this year.

Here’s an excerpt from the Review-Journal article, including McCartney’s thoughts on the stack of audiobooks he brought for the trip: “A couple of them were kind of dry, one of them was a nice sort of crime adventure, then we got to this ‘Beautiful Children.’ Man, I tell you, it’s so hard-core … That’s what I think of now when I think of Vegas.”
