Writers Rally To Support Novelist Charles Bock & His Family

In February, a team of writers will throw The World’s Most Literary Rent Party Ever to support novelist Charles Bock and his family. UPDATE: This PayPal link has been troublesome, so follow this link and click on the graphic to donate via PayPal.

Here’s more from Edward Champion: “I have learned that Charles Bock, author of Beautiful Children, and his family are now facing serious hardship. Bock’s wife, Diana, is now in the hospital with leukemia. They have a two year old daughter. The costs — physical, emotional, and financial — are quite high. Difficult even for a writer who has experienced some success. In an effort to help the Bock Family out, the literary community has come together for a special benefit that is set to go down on Sunday, February 6, 2011. At PS 122 in the East Village. Tickets are set to go on sale on January 10th.”

As you can see from the poster embedded above, Bock’s supporters include everybody from Gary Shteyngart to Rivka Galchen to Jonathan Franzen to Rick Moody. Editor’s Note: This post has been updated to include PayPal information.

Yesterday the New York Public Library announced the five finalists for the 2010 Young Lions Fiction Award, a $10,000 prize awarded each annually to a writer under 35-years-old. In the video embedded above, GalleyCat caught up with last year’s prize winner, Salvatore Scibona.

After the jump, you can watch our interview with 2009 finalist Rivka Galchen. The five finalists for 2010 are:

Jedediah Berry for The Manual of Detection (The Penguin Press)
Katie Kitamura for The Longshot (Free Press)
Philipp Meyer for American Rust (Spiegel and Grau)
C.E. Morgan for All the Living (Farrar, Straus and Giroux)
Wells Tower for Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned (Farrar, Straus and Giroux)

Here’s more about the award: “Established in 2001, this annual award recognizes the work of young authors and celebrates their accomplishments publicly, making a difference in their lives as they continue to build their careers. The Young Lions Fiction Award was spearheaded by Young Lions Committee members Ethan Hawke, Jennifer Rudolph Walsh, Rick Moody, and Hannah McFarland.”

Dateline LBF: Industry and Blogosphere Reactions

Simon Trewin: “After the terrible experiences of the 2006 London Book Fair at ExCel in Docklands where nothing seemed to go right at all it was a joy to return to West London for what many attendees agree was the best fair ever.”

Macmillan president Richard Charkin‘s two dispatches are colorful and detail-laden but most notable for the following observation: “. My back-of-an-envelope calculations suggest that the elimination of all trade book fairs (LBF, BEA, Bologna, Delhi, Guadalajara, Tokyo, Cape Town etc) might reduce total industry costs by several billion dollars.” Makes more that “just a boy” think…

Ali Karim describes the peculiar sensation of meeting Dean Koontz via the LongPen. Karim also provided the video at the top of this post (along with other video captures of John Banville‘s noir panel.)
