How to Make a Talking Book Cover

The first issue of X-O Manowar featured a talking comic book cover (video embedded above).

With a smartphone and QR codes, the comic book company actually made the main character speak through the comic cover in a short video. Do you think more authors should experiment with this cover technology? The comic was written by The Surrogates author Robert Venditti with art by Eisner Award-winning Conan artist Cary Nord.

Here’s more about the comic: “Born into battle, Aric of Dacia — heir to the throne of the Visigoth people — has never known peace. After a brutal encounter with a mysterious enemy known as The Vine leaves him a prisoner on an alien world, the only hope Aric has of returning to his family and saving them from slavery is to seize a weapon of incalculable destruction and become X-O Manowar!?

Percy Jackson Series Adapted as Graphic Novel

At a New York Comic Con panel discussion, Hyperion showed off a graphic novel adaptation of Rick Riordan‘s Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. The Lightning Thief graphic novel launches today alongside the first book in the sequel series (The Lost Hero).

Robert Venditti wrote the graphic adaptation of The Lightning Thief. Venditti explained: “One of my own original creations, The Surrogates was recently adapted [into a film] so I wanted to see what it was like on the other side of the adaptation process.”

The original novel contains 375 pages, but the graphic novel clocks in at 125 pages. Editor Christian Trimmer revealed that The Sea of Monsters and The Titan’s Curse are currently in the works and are tentatively set for release dates in 2012. Trimmer said, “Children’s publishing is such a great place to be because you’ve got the library’s support and the school’s support and the parents’ support and these stories will just live on and on and on.”

How To Break into Comic Book Writing

robert23.gifOn mediabistro.com’s Morning Media Menu today, Robert Venditti explained how he became a sucessful graphic novelist–writing “Surrogates,” the indie graphic novel that was adapted into an upcoming movie starring Bruce Willis.

“Just getting into the arts in general, whether you want to be a musician, or an artist, it isn’t a job you can just go out and apply for, he explained. “My way of doing it was to volunteer at the mailroom of Top Shelf, a comics publisher here in Atlanta. Just as a way to learn about the industry and be around like-minded people.”

Venditti shared his remarkable story–climbing from the mailroom of an independent comics company to watching his graphic novel become a major motion picture. We also discussed the adaptation process for the upcoming movie and the art of crafting a graphic novel.
