Last night, Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia launched his book tour with an interview conducted by CNN’s Piers Morgan. Scalia’s co-author, professor Bryan A. Garner, also appeared to discuss their title Reading Law: The Interpretation of Legal Texts.

We’ve embedded one clip above. Here’s more from TV Newser: “While interviews with Scalia are unusual, they are not unprecedented. He has spoken to CBS News and PBS’ Charlie Rose in recent years, and has occasionally been interviewed at events that were broadcast on C-SPAN.”

Follow this link to view clips from last night’s interview. Appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986, Scalia has become the longest-serving justice currently on the Supreme Court. In 2008, he and Garner wrote Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges (2008).

Politicians at the Comic Book Store

For comic book publisher Bluewater Productions, it’s not superheros that bring in the big bucks, it’s politicians.

According to a piece on Politico, the publisher has sold 130,000 copies of a comic about Michelle Obama. “She competes with Justin Bieber just a little bit,” Darren Davis, the company’s president told Politico about the bestseller.

Comics about other politicians are also popular sellers. Politico has more: “More than 25,000 copies of both Clinton and Palin’s comic books were sold, and Davis and Schultz haven’t looked back since, going on to produce comic books on political figures including Colin Powell, Ronald Reagan, Bill O’Reilly, Caroline Kennedy, Al Franken, Nancy Pelosi, Michelle Obama, Arnold Schwarzenegger and George W. Bush.”

President Barack Obama to Write about Haiti

Politico reported today that President Barack Obama will write a cover story for Newsweek about the earthquake in Haiti.

National Review columnist and author Jonah Goldberg responded with a dismissive column: “some might wonder, given Newsweek’s fawning coverage of the man, whether this is the first time he’s written for Newsweek or whether this is just the first time he got a byline.” GalleyCat has always celebrated Obama’s writing credentials. The President’s memoir was a bestseller, and last year he urged This well-known author urged children to grow up to be writers in a speech.

What do you think? The Politico article also included a response from Newsweek editor Jon Meacham responding to critics: “We’ve published Ronald Reagan and John McCain, and we invited George W. Bush to write in our pages … The occasion for the Obama essay is an international tragedy with humanitarian and political implications.”

Most importantly, if you want to donate money to the recovery effort, The Rumpus has an amazing list of aid organizations.

Profits Fall But Sales Up for HarperCollins Q4

As part of parent company NewsCorp‘s overall reporting on its financials, HarperCollins reported fourth quarter operating income of $21 million, an improvement of $27 million versus the fourth quarter of fiscal 2006. Current quarter results were led by sales of THE DANGEROUS BOOK FOR BOYS by Con & Hal Iggulden and THE REAGAN DIARIES by Ronald Reagan. During the fourth quarter, HarperCollins had 53 books on The New York Times bestseller list, including 8 titles that reached the number one spot, and for the full year HarperCollins had 128 books on The New York Times bestseller list, including 16 titles that reached the number one position.

Ron can’t help but wonder, though, how much better those Q4 numbers would’ve been if HarperCollins hadn’t chickened out on If I Did It at the last minute.

Ronald Reagan Diaries to be Published

Late former president Ronald Reagan‘s private diaries, once the subject of argument over whether excerpts would be produced as part of the Iran-contra trial of former national security adviser John M. Poindexter, are being published for all the world to see later this month by HarperCollins, reports the New York Times’ Motoko Rich. Earlier, the Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz added that an excerpt of the diaries is in the June issue of Vanity Fair.

Five volumes of handwritten diary entries in 8-by-11-inch leather-bound maroon books have been edited by the historian Douglas Brinkley to produce an abridged version of 734 pages which will hit stores on May 22. For $35 readers can glean insights into the president’s character and get a ringside seat on his contemporaneous takes on world events. A complete edition will be published in several volumes in the next year or two, said Tim Duggan, executive editor at HarperCollins.

If you’re wondering why now, Fred Ryan, chairman of the Reagan Library, said that about a decade ago Reagan had given the library permission to publish the diaries. “They contain tremendous amounts of information about the presidency, Ronald Reagan and America at that time,” Ryan said. “We thought that now would be a good time to release these.” Proving once more that information wants to be free – or at least relatively inexpensive…
