J.D. Salinger Book & Documentary Coming

Simon & Schuster will publish The Private War of J.D. Salinger by David Shields and Shane Salerno in September, an oral biography of the great author that is guarded by “elaborate security.”

Salerno directed a documentary about the author that will air on American Masters in January 2014. The publisher negotiated the deal with Salerno and senior editor Jofie Ferrari-Adler will edit. Both publisher Jonathan Karp and Ferrari-Adler had sought to acquire the book for a few years.

Here’s more about the book, from the release: “The project has been the subject of much speculation since a 2010 Newsweek story, ‘Salinger Like You’ve Never Seen Him,‘ about the work-in-progress. Entertainment Weekly reported on the elaborate security surrounding the project … Salerno has been interviewing colleagues and intimates of Salinger since 2004. Since then, he and co-author David Shields have been shaping the interviews into an oral biography, which will be accompanied by never-before-seen photos of Salinger.”

Book & Documentary Projects Round-Up

Bibliophiles and film fanatics can look forward to a plethora of book-and-documentary projects. Simon & Schuster announced that rock artist Pearl Jam has signed a deal with them; the illustrated self-portrait, Pearl Jam Twenty, will be released in September.

Here’s more from the press release: “Published and in celebration of Pearl Jam’s twentieth anniversary and in conjunction with Cameron Crowe‘s definitive documentary film and soundtrack of the same name, Pearl Jam Twenty is an aesthetically stunning and definitive chronicle of their two decades as a band.”

The video embedded above features the trailer for HBO’s Bobby Fischer Against The World. We reported earlier on the books Bobby Fischer and Living in the Material World: George Harrison; the accompanying films will be available later this year.

Author Don Winslow has a new project; a prequel to his 2010 novel Savages. Above, we’ve embedded the book trailer for the original book.

According to Deadline, screenwriter Shane Salerno conceived of the idea; Salerno adapted Savages into a screenplay for its forthcoming film adaptation. Simon & Schuster has set a publication date for the prequel to coincide with the film’s release in 2012.

Here’s more from the L.A. Times: “The film begins shooting next month with the Oscar-winning director [Oliver Stone] at the helm. With Stone comes a star-heavy cast, including John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Emile Hirsch, Salma Hayek, Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson and Benicio Del Toro.”

J.D. Salinger: ‘I See My Novel as a Novel and Only as a Novel’

University Archives will auction a note that J.D. Salinger wrote rejecting filmmaker Hubert Cornfield‘s request to adapt Catcher in the Rye.

Salinger wrote: “I appreciate and respect your ardor, but for the present I see my novel as a novel and only as a novel. Should I change my mind in the future–which is extremely doubtful–I very probably would take on any casting and directing chores myself. Thank you for your interest and please take this as absolutely final.”

Salinger, who passed away in January 2010, never made his directorial debut. He will be the subject of the two-hour Shane Salerno documentary, Salinger. Famous names involved with the project include journalist Tom Wolfe, biographer A. Scott Berg, and Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman.
