David Moldawer Leaves Amazon Publishing

Amazon Publishing senior editor David Moldawer is headed to the online education start-up creativeLIVE to serve as director of business. He will still be based in New York City.

Moldawer joined Amazon in September 2011. Previously, he had served as an editor at McGraw-Hill Business. He explained his new role in an email:

I will be working with many of the same authors I once edited or sought to acquire, only this time they will be teaching live courses on business subjects … Authors like Tim Ferriss, Ramit Sethi, and Ryan Holiday have already taught creativeLIVE courses to tens of thousands of viewers around the world, and many more business experts are on the way. So I’ve left book publishing, but I will still be an active part of the industry in many ways–I also hope to use creativeLIVE to sell a ton of our experts’ books!

85,000 BitTorrent Users Visited Tim Ferriss’ Amazon Page in 7 Days

While a number of bookstores will not stock his Amazon Publishing title, author Tim Ferriss decided to use BitTorrent to promote The 4-Hour Chef this month.

AppNewser has some new statistics about the publishing experiment.

For the last seven days, BitTorrent members had exclusive access to excerpts, unpublished writing and multimedia materials related to the book. Today, BitTorrent revealed some impressive statistics: “The Tim Ferriss 4-Hour Chef Bundle has now been downloaded 211,000 times. From BitTorrent, 85,000 visitors clicked to check out the book in the Amazon store, a huge number for the category.

Tim Ferriss Teams Up with File-Sharing Site

Bestselling author Tim Ferriss will promote his new book on BitTorrent next week, part of a strategy to push against booksellers who refuse to sell books published by Amazon.

In the press release, they included this provocative line: “it’s poised to be the most banned book in US history.” AppNewser has more:

Ferriss will publish The 4-Hour Chef next week through Amazon Publishing and he will use the file-sharing site BitTorrent to promote the book. Through the partnership, BitTorrent members exclusive access to excerpts, unpublished writing and multimedia materials related to the book. In 2010, Ferriss hit the Amazon bestseller list with The 4-Hour Body, a book traditionally published through Crown Archetype. A number of bookstores have said they will not stock his new book since it is published by Amazon.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to Distribute Amazon Books

Amazon has struck a new deal to distribute its books outside of its popular online store. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s brand new New Harvest imprint will now publish “all of Amazon Publishing’s New York-based imprint’s adult titles in print and distribute them in North America outside of the Amazon.com platform.”

When Amazon Publishing’s East Coast Group launches its inaugural list next fall, it will include books by Tim Ferriss, Penny Marshall, Deepak Chopra and James Franco. Last year Houghton Mifflin Harcourt mounted a major restructuring.

Amazon Publishing’s East Coast Group publisher Larry Kirshbaum had this statement: “Our goal has been, and remains, to introduce authors to as many readers as possible … This new agreement with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt enables us to broaden our distribution and get our books into more readers’ hands.”
