Tony Kushner’s Lincoln Screenplay Published

The Theatre Communications Group will be publishing the Lincoln screenplay on January 22, 2013. Above, we’ve embedded the official trailer of the adaptation of Doris Kearns Goodwin‘s nonfiction book.

Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Tony Kushner adapted the book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, for Oscar-winning director Stephen Spielberg‘s latest silver screen flick. Goodwin has agreed to pen a foreword for the Lincoln publication. The book will contain eight pages of color photographs from the movie.

Here’s more from the release: “Kushner’s plays include Angels in America, Parts One and TwoA Bright Room Called Day; Slavs!; Homebody/Kabul;Caroline, or Change, a musical with composer Jeanine Tesori; and The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the  Scriptures. He wrote the screenplays for Mike Nichols’ film of Angels in America and for Steven Spielberg’s Munich.”

Salman Rushdie to Chair PEN World Voices Festival

The lineup for the PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature has been revealed.  The annual event will be held in New York City from April 30th through May 6th.

Novelist and PEN World Voices chair Salman Rushdie will deliver the Arthur Miller Freedom to Write Lecture this year. The festival will feature Martin Amis, Margaret Atwood, Paul Auster, Graydon Carter, Michael Cunningham, Jennifer Egan, E.L. Doctorow, Tony Kushner, Herta Müller, Marjane Satrapi, Colson Whitehead and many other writers.

Rushdie had this statement in the release: “In an era of ever-expanding ‘screen-time,’ live/in-person readings, conversations and literary performances have never been more radical or more necessary … These live events break down the invisible walls that separate us into our own solitary computer pods and re-assert the importance of dialogue, activism, and community without borders.”

Steven Spielberg & Tony Kushner To Adapt Team of Rivals

Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin‘s Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln will be adapted by Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg.

Pulitzer/Tony-winning writer Tony Kushner will handle the screenplay. According to Deadline, “it is anticipated that the film will focus on the political collision of Lincoln and the powerful men of his cabinet on the road to abolition and the end of the Civil War.”

Spielberg has hired two Oscar-winning actors to star in this film. Daniel Day-Lewis will play President Abraham Lincoln and Sally Field will play First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln.
