The Land of Lost Kindles

Left_hand_2.gifOver the weekend, one user asked (along with a major newspaper) a good question–what happens to your books when you lose your Kindle?

The NY Times interviewed a Kindle owner who unsuccessfully tried to disable his Kindle after losing the device. According to the article, Amazon won’t deal with a lost Kindle unless “contacted by a police officer bearing a subpoena.” Without the subpoena, it appears the thieves or lucky individuals who find it next can keep your books.

Here’s more from the article: “The complaints have left Amazon with a new public relations dilemma … If the company were to shut down a Kindle that had been erroneously reported as stolen, it might be accused of playing cop, judge and jury. Then again, it is also possible that Amazon is simply avoiding the financial burden of adjudicating claims.” (Image via.)
