While commenting on drug vs. behavioral therapy is beyond the scope of Galleycat, I couldn't help but be amused by an initiative being undertaken by doctors in North Essex. The idea, according to the BBC, is that patients with certain mental health problems are to be prescribed library books instead of medication as part of an innovative scheme.
Anyone who visits their doctor with psychological problems will be directed to books on overcoming the condition available at their local library, where they can learn more about their condition. Will it work? Hard to know at this point, but it sure sounds like it's a lot cheaper...
