Waterstone’s Taps Its Literary Next Generation
If Granta‘s Best of Young American Novelists list wasn’t enough future fodder, then chew on the group of 25 youngish authors that Waterstone’s has assembled, which includes Naomi Alderman, Guatam Malkani, C.J. Sansom, Louise Welsh, Charlotte Mendelsohn, Jasper Fforde and many others.
Yesterday John Howells, the panel’s chairman, told the Guardian: “This is a list for the ordinary reader who goes into our shops, not for those who follow literary trends.” Some listed authors get free front-of-shop promotion today and all on the list can expect to have the formidable muscle of the Waterstone’s sales force behind them – an advantage not open to those on the Granta lists.
