What You Know / To Be Real
He may not even exist, but JT Leroy knows his music. That’s the assessment of Paul Bresnick, the literary agent who keeps one foot in his editorial roots by overseeing Da Capo’s annual Best Music Writing series. Every year, Bresnick rounds up about 100 articles on the music scene and ships them off to a guest editor who whittles the pile down to the final anthology; this year, it was Leroy. “Each year, I worry that the guest editor will pass over my favorite pieces,” Bresnick told me. “I was pleased that JT Leroy chose the ones I felt were the best. He also suggested a few pieces that I had not seen.” The only contact between the two was by email, however, so Bresnick says he can’t offer an informed opinion on whether his guest editor is who he says he is. “From my point of view, it doesn’t matter,” he counters. “Whoever ‘JT Leroy’ is, he made excellent choices for the collection, and wrote a creditable introduction.”
