‘White Guy’ Author Invented White People Humor, Actually

whiteguy2.jpgWell, not really. But Stephen Hunt, the author of ‘The White Guy,’ which comes out in Canada in May and is currently being shopped to US publishers, wants to clarify that he’s not jumping on the ‘Stuff White People Like’ bandwagon, as we’d sorta-asserted. “I didn’t jump on any bandwagon. My book about white people is based on the play I wrote about white people that was produced by the Public Theatre in 1995~! I signed the deal to do the book in 2006,” he informs us. Also, his book features the input of nonwhite people — namely, his wife. “I’ve been married to an African-American woman for 10 years, we have a 5 year old son and she contributes 4 essays (Mel’s Deep Thoughts) to ‘The White Guy,’ so not only do you get white guys writing about white guys, you get Mel. (I also issue the first pre-emptive apology).” It’s a crowded market for self-deprecating white people humor, so it’s important to do what you can to make your offering stand out.
