The Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University is seeking an Information Designer/Developer to join our Communications & Marketing team. This position plays a key role in presenting the school to a wide range of audiences--from prospective students, donors and industry partners to current faculty, staff, students and alumni-through the development of compelling, consistently branded web and print communications materials.
The position is responsible for graphic design and theme development for school websites, including pratt.duke.edu and associated departmental, program, and faculty sites, working closely with our senior web programmer and web content manager. The position also provides graphic design and production services for printed materials and other projects, and assists with other duties in support of the school's marketing communications needs.
Work Performed
Collaborate with communications team and faculty/staff constituents to assess short-term and long-term needs and goals for web communications and translate requirements into effective solutions. Provide input on strategy and timelines for new project requests and proactively propose new projects and improvements to existing sites.
Design and develop user-centered websites that effectively achieve marketing and communications goals. Develop themes and architect the content management system (CMS) to be most effectively used across school websites and by other content managers. Provide CMS training and support to faculty and staff.
Stay up to date on web and mobile technologies and best practices; recommend and implement enhancements to improve site design and user experience.
Help develop and adhere to branding guidelines to ensure consistent presentation of the Pratt School of Engineering across all media, within the parameters of the Duke University style guide. Assist the director of communications and marketing in advising internal and external audiences on branding issues. Develop new program logos and generate appropriately branded materials such as brochure, Powerpoint, and letterhead templates.
Design print projects including postcards, flyers, banners, and collateral. Assist in all aspects of production including selection and evaluation of photos, copy and other graphics. Serve as liaison with Duke print procurement and print vendors.
Create and manage digital advertisements for the school's plasma displays.
Manage image database and assist with photo optimization and processing and graphic production.
Work with the team to develop and manage multimedia projects.
Assist with routine content maintenance and updates.
Qualifications:
Required skills:
* Extensive experience in Drupal theme development and ability to work in other CMS environments such as Wordpress
* Understanding of web development technologies including PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
* Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite (inDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks)
* Knowledge of web standards, including best practices for accessibility and usability
* Knowledge of Web optimization techniques for images and files
* Knowledge of SEO and familiarity with web analytics
* Experience with print design and production
* Excellent graphic design skills
* Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
Preferred skills:
* Experience in video editing and production
* Strong skills as a photographer
In addition, we are looking for a collaborative and motivated team member who is service-oriented, attentive to details, and highly organized, with the ability to effectively manage multiple projects and reliably meet deadlines.
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Work requires skills normally acquired though a bachelor's degree in graphic design or a related field.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of two years of web design and production experience in a professional, deadline-oriented environment.
