Job Requirements The New York Times Company is seeking a Director of Strategy to join the Strategy & Development department. The Strategy & Development Department is a new cross-company function, accountable to the CEO, with a mission to identify, analyze, recommend and execute major value creation opportunities in partnership with The New York Times’s executive leadership. The Strategy & Development group performs all strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, venture investing and business development activities for the Company.

The Director will report into the Vice President of Strategy. The Director will serve as a thought partner to senior executives from The Times’s major business areas –Print, Digital and Advertising – prioritizing and project managing strategy projects within those areas as needed. They are the hub and center of managing day-to-day strategy work for their designated area.

The Director will also each directly manage 2-3 reports, who will be deployed on projects across the department.

The Director will be expected to:
- Build trust with senior-most executives in the company
- Recommend strategies and implementation plans for delivering large-scale enterprise value – success will be determined based on identification of opportunities and adoption of recommendations, but also how much financial impact the company realizes from those recommendations
- Lead team of managers, analysts and internal clients in major strategic projects in the areas of Advertising, Digital Consumer Products, and Print Consumer Products, among other areas
- Function as knowledge expert for designated business area, on internal and external dynamics and market trends
- Manage teams of managers and analysts in conducting in-depth analyses of economics, sales and market data, at a quality equivalent to leading professional services firms
- Communicate ideas, objectives and results to team members, internal clients and the rest of the organization, inspiring confidence and excitement about the company’s future direction
- Directly manage 2-3 high-performing employees, including managing their career development, work schedules and personal/professional issues – effectively creating a high-performing team
- Serve as mentor to entire Strategy & Development team on NYT business and on skills in the “Strategy toolkit”

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for the Director position will be an individual who has reached the Engagement Manager / Case Team Leader level, or the equivalent, at a leading management consulting firm. However, candidates who have demonstrated leadership, excellence, and the ability to thrive in demanding and relatively unstructured environments are also highly encouraged to apply. An MBA or equivalent post-graduate level training is required.

- Strategic planning skills, preferably learned at a top-tier management consultancy – this includes mastery of major strategic, analytical and financial frameworks:

- Ability to lead team and senior client in defining in a concrete manner what problem needs to be solved
- Ability to focus client attention on most critical problem, even if he or she is not focused on it
- Problem structuring skills:
- Ability to lead team in breaking up a problem into a logical set of smaller pieces
- Ability to lead team in creation of a roadmap for solving the problem
- Ability to lead team in swiftly identifying key issues to focus on
- Ability to lead team in efficiently building a robust fact base
- Ability to lead team in analyzing and drawing conclusions
- Ability to lead team in evaluating all appropriate alternatives and identify the right solution
- Ability to lead team in anticipating and proactively addressing key client issues
- Data gathering and analysis
- Recommendations development
- Ability to mentor other team members, including direct and indirect reports and peers, in strategy consulting skills
- Demonstrated interest in and experience in media
- Deep understanding of competitive and technological challenges facing the entire media industry and NYT in particular
