Your tasks Under the supervision of the Senior Editor, the Associate Editor will research, acquire, and publish books within the areas of pure and applied mathematics. He or she will support the Editor by soliciting and evaluating book proposals, soliciting and evaluating reviews of book proposals and manuscripts, evaluating final manuscripts, transferring manuscript files to production, overseeing journal activity, and performing administrative tasks. Specific responsibilities include:
_ Acquisition activity: Within the discipline(s) assigned by editorial management, pursue an active and efficient acquisitions strategy via correspondence with potential authors and editors; travel to conferences and university campuses; consultation with series editors, editorial advisory board members, and other advisors; etc. Prepare contracts and maintain records to the satisfaction of editorial management. _ Within the discipline(s) assigned, be responsible for defining, maintaining, and furthering the company's accepted goals in terms of program growth and development.
_ Support the Editor to meet goals set by editorial management for contracts signed and books published each year. _ Collaborate with other publishing editors, as well as product managers, project coordinators, production editors, sales managers, and customer service staff in New York and their counterparts in Springer_s offices abroad. Monitor other departments_ activities on behalf of the Associate Editor's projects, and coordinate (where possible) the Associate Editor's program with corresponding programs in other Springer locations. _ In support of the Editor on selected projects: (1) Explain technical aspects of manuscript preparation to authors, volume editors, and contributors; monitor delivery dates and review the technical quality of submitted manuscripts; resolve problems related to making manuscripts suitable for production; and transmit final manuscript files to production. (2) Conduct market research at the direction of editorial management. _ Performs related duties as required.
Our requirements _ Education: Bachelor_s degree in mathematics, engineering, or a related science (physics, chemistry, biology, or computer science). _ Experience: Minimum 2-3 years_ experience in mathematical, scientific, or medical book or journal publishing. _ Knowledge, Skills, and Traits: Excellent written and oral communication skills; thorough knowledge of office procedures including efficient filing and maintenance of systems; superior attention to detail; good interpersonal skills; ability to independently prioritize work assignments; ability to follow directions; strong organizational, independent research, and analytical skills. Must be able to act diplomatically in representing Springer; show initiative, and demonstrate good judgment. Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as familiarity with database and other software is required. Experience using social media in a business setting is desirable.
