Interview

What's next for you?
I am producing a series of tutorial screencasts to enhance online support content. My attitude? If I'm going to write about it or talk about it, I'd better know my stuff. I am a dedicated hands-on person, when it comes to technology. Rather than take someone else's word for it and dabble in theories, I like to get my hands dirty. That's why I've been obsessed with virtual worlds this year. If 3D chat is the future of online communities, I am keeping my skills current.

What did you like best about being a public radio talk show host?
I love meeting new people and learning new things, so for me, having a "license" to chat with tech and marketing executives about the inner workings of their companies or products was a dream come true. When I interview someone, I am always asking questions from the reader/audience POV, as though I am the person who wants to make my business or life more successful.

What was the hardest thing about introducing marketers to the Net in '94?
It was an uphill battle, getting marcom folks to believe that the Web wasn't a job for IT alone. At that point, the commercial Web was so new, most people just averted their eyes when I brought it up. And those were the technology marketers! These days, social media and virtual worlds are the tickets, so showing corporate execs the "how and why" is a major focus of mine. Today, most people don't understand that Second Life is not a video game, so again, I'm on the bleeding (ouch) edge.
