Give It Up

I was wondering - at what point do you give up on a mss? I've had an agent since earlier this year and she's been sending around my mss but has gotten rejections - nice ones - but still rejections. I don't email her often but the last couple times that I have she hasn't responded - I'm guessing she's losing the love. Anyway - is there like a set number of submissions you might make before you give up? And when you give up - what's your advice to the writer? Do you just put the book away for a little while or do you just tell the writer to forget about it?

Agent X answers this question. Of course, chief among her answer is the ever-important "Whatever you do, don't take it personally."
