Publish That Book!

books.jpgAndrea Campbell knows a thing or two about publishing. She the author of nine nonfiction books on a variety of topics including forensic science, criminal law, primatology, and entertaining using interactive games, among others. Her first book, Great Games for Great Parties: How to Throw a Perfect Party was published in 1991, has several editions in foreign languages, and has been on Amazon.com's bestsellers list for entertaining/parties from its debut. Her latest book, Making Crime Pay: The Writer's Guide to Criminal Law, Evidence, and Procedure is a Writer's Digest Book Club selection. By January 2005, Andrea will have eight books on the market-all at the same time. And she has some thoughts for you on how to publish your nonfiction book:

Writing a nonfiction book is a powerful experience. It can help to open up new avenues of exploration in your life. As it is a long-term project, becoming an author provides a venue for your passion and legitimately gives you the time to follow it through in more detail and with an editor who cares about the end result. Writing a book also gives you a better platform, establishes you as an "expert" in your topic, and provides great satisfaction when your readers admire and connect with you personally such as at booksignings, through the Internet email system or by buying your book through your own website.

Andrea does say:

- I think a writer of nonfiction work should be prolific.

- I think a writer of nonfiction books should have a passion about what they are proposing.

- I think a writer of nonfiction books should continue to learn and analyze the publishing industry and its peccadilloes.

- I think a nonfiction writer should strive to perfect their craft.

- I think the nonfiction writer should become an "expert."

- I think a nonfiction writer should be studying their market all the time.

- I believe it is easier to get published in nonfiction than with fiction.

- I believe editors actually get more excited about nonfiction titles.

- I believe there will always be a need for well-crafted, informative nonfiction books.

- I believe that anyone can craft a nonfiction book -but only if they know what they are doing.

Caution, you will be challenged and you will work hard, but the results and knowledge gained will be amazing-and you just might be holding up your own title one day soon."
