Grammar books are best-sellers. That's right, people are tearing themselves away from Paris to study punctuation. Pop culture pundit Gaylord Fields (copy editor, Rolling Stone, Spin, Spy) explains.
Q. Our grammar classes always fill up. Why is grammar so hot?
A. We all inhabit a crazy, mixed-up world of chaos and disorder. Grammar courses and books instill a (possibly overstated) sense that the tiger can be tamed.
Q. Is it possible to master this stuff if you never got a handle on it?
A. Usually it's more of a matter of unlearning bad style and usage -- we're not going in as blank slates. We've just picked up counterproductive rules that we need to replace with more established ones.
