'Those that can't do, teach, and those that can't teach... teach gym.'
About half of the emails I get consist of a resume and the line "I am open to teaching anything." While I love a teacher who is a jack of all trades, what I really want to know is what you think you would be best at teaching. Are you a grammar guru? A world traveler with a host of clips? Don't be shy -- or modest. Nothing makes me happier than a mission statement of the exact course you want to teach, followed by a detailed outline of the class. It shows you know your topic and are prepared to cover it in-depth. Another tip: stick to what you know. Have you been a television reporter for 25 years? Great! I would love to have you teach a class on news reporting. Do you have 10 years of copy editing experience? Our Intro to Copy Editing class is perfect for you. I know it's always tempting to think outside the box and teach the things you're passionate about, but the best classes are led by people with experience in their field. Got a great resume and proposal? Send it my way. We're always looking for great new instructors. Send resumes and an impressive outline to jessica AT mediabistro DOT com.
