Bulletin Board Blab 7.26.06Here are some of the talked-about topics on the boards today... "does anyone know the ballpark salary for an editor at AOL?" "has anyone ever been forced to quit? i'm unsure what to do about this situation. my editor is giving me a timeline and basically, i have three weeks to find a new job. yet i'm still expected to produce all of this work..." "Which schools (private, public, American, foreign) offer decent Masters (or other post-degree) programs in journalism?" How long should you wait to hear back from a literary editor you've queried, and would it be wrong to put out some inquiries to other agencies in the meantime? "I am still in college majoring in communication arts with a concentration in journalism. I am a single parent of one and my parents are supporting me until I finish my education. I really want to work for Conde Nast. My interests lie in fashion and pop culture. I live 15 minutes away from DC. I plan on applying for an internship, though I don't have any connections. I have heard that the starting salary is low. Would I be able to support my daughter if I did get a job? Do they have good benefits? Does anyone have advice on how to get the internship, or how to get my foot into the door?" A good one, here: "My questions, then, are: how many clients did you have before you took the plunge and quit your day job? Do you have any experience with temp-ish agencies? Did you find yourself working a steady part time gig for a while (waiting tables, retail, substitute teaching, whatever)? How do you know when it's time to just go for it?" |
