Link UpIf you've got a blog and want to get linked more, Gina at Lifehacker has a few tips. From my experience, this is where shy writers need to get more promotional. If you really want to be linked by a place that has a lot of traffic, you need to write with a place that has a lot of traffic in mind. Write something gossipy, tech-related, political and imagine what new you have to say that would make another site link to you. Then, promote yourself, but do this sparingly. Several "heads up" emails a week is a good way to make yourself unwanted, but every once in a while (read: once or twice a month at most) will keep you in bloggers' minds without getting in their face. Most bloggers don't need to hear a life story or full-length pitch, either. At most, say, "Hey, I saw you were covering X, Y, Z. You might find this of interest," along with a permanent link to the piece of interest (a permanent link so that readers won't have to search for the post in question.) Finally, once you've sent your heads-up email, don't follow up. Bloggers often, believe it or not, have lives, doing other jobs, following leads, making phone calls, so if they're not linking to you right now, it's because they're too busy to do so at the moment or they just didn't go for it. Sending emails saying "Why didn't you link to me yet?" is a great way not to get linked and not get higher traffic. |
