Professional Jealousy
I think that jealousy is something most writers are ashamed to bring up, because it indicates that their own talents are lesser than their counterparts and that they're petty. I think that positive jealousy is an excellent thing. Say a friend of yours (who you feel has similar talents/resources to you) publishes a piece in Esquire, where you've always wanted to publish. First, be happy for them, send them a congratulatory note. Second, make it your goal to publish something in Esquire that year too. Why not you? Why not meeee? Why them? is along the lines of more regular jealousy. I hate feeling it, because I feel like it's a waste of time. When you are jealous of someone mainly because you hate that they are more successful than you and you can't stand seeing them in that position, it's a sucky feeling. After congratulating your friend like a good person (not only because having them on your side may help you professionally, but tossing out good karma when you're feeling crappy helps you get over it), face your emotion and talk to a friend who you can depend on. Ideally, you want to hear "I understand why you're jealous, but you're so great, it's silly." Mostly, don't dwell on it, because the more you do, the longer it will stick around. And don't forget: it's quite possible that there are people out there jealous of you. |
