Freelance Success features some tips on travel writing in its newsletter with a downloadable list of 64 of the top U.S. newspapers' travel section information in its forums. Some tips the FS newsletter offers:
* Don't query. With few exceptions - the New York Times, perhaps - editors want to see the completed story. Some even want to se photos before making up their minds. Just paste the completed story into the body of an e-mail. Avoid attachments; many editors can't download them. Do personalize the greeting - "Dear Mary Jones" sells more stories than "Dear Editor."
* Don't expect a response. If the editor wants the story, you'll hear. Silence will tell you he doesn't. Randy Curwen, travel editor at the Chicago Tribune, says he gets upwards of 100 manuscripts a week, and he just doesn't have time to respond to all of them.
* It's a bad idea to sell the same story to competing newspapers. You may do it once, but you won't do it twice. Glancing at the map will give you an idea of the geography, but in states like California, New York, Ohio, Florida and New Jersey, where the sales areas might not be obvious, ask if you have any doubt.
