Quickie Tip on Queer Writing

rainboww.jpgWriter Kate Walter's work has appeared in LGBT outlets aplenty, including The Advocate, The Blade, In the Family, and Lesbian Nation.com. Next month in New York she'll be teaching the MB course Now That You're Out: Writing Queer. I asked her if she could impart any wisdom that she's gained during her years of experience and here is what she shared:

One of the trickiest parts of writing for the gay press is the community journalism aspect. During my long stint as a reviewer, it was not unusual for me to be reviewing a book or play or album by someone I'd met at a party in the East Village or someone I'd bump into on the street. In fact, I often got story ideas when socializing.

When I was reviewing for the mainstream press, I rarely knew any of the artists I was covering and there was little chance I'd run into them later at a private party.

This is a major difference, but you always have to remember that your role as a journalist is to be honest.
