Q: My company is working on a project that I think some trade magazines would be interested in. So I’ve got all these magazines, with all of the names and e-mails on the masthead, but who should I send an e-mail to and who should I make a pitch to. It’s more than just a press release, I think. I’d just like to say, “Hey, we’re doing something cool, would you want to write about it?”
A: I spoke to a writer I know who works a lot with trade publications and press releases. “I think it’s a great idea to promote your company’s work to trade magazines. The best thing to do would be to email some lower-rung editors (assistant, associate, etc…) a press release and follow up with a phone call a day later. At my magazine, my editor in chief gets so much crap in his email…it’s better if people email things to me (I’m the associate editor) and then I’ll act as kind of a gatekeeper and then pass the info along to him.”
