Good news: freelancers write half the book at Essence, which aims to appeal to an entire African-American woman’s lifestyle. Beginners should target the news section, “Work and Wealth” and “Voices.” No more poetry however. Send pitch letters with your bio and/or clips, unless you’re pitching an essay, in which case: send the whole thing in.
