How to Pitch: Family Circle

family_circle.jpgThis Seven Sisters stalwart has a sleek new design and seeks full-length features from seasoned freelancers, writes Melissa Walker. The magazine’s target reader? “She’s a mom in her mid-30s, maybe a little older,” says Senior Editor Gay Norton Edelman, “and she’s the mother of a 9- to 17-year-old.” Edelman also knows what a Family Circle feature should impart. “We want real service,” says Edelman. “Our reader puts down the magazine and some problem of hers is on its way to resolution.” Don’t pitch the Front of the Book in this case–look to the “Family” and “Health” sections, relationship articles and real-life stories. No tragic tales, though. Because Family Circle editors want to have your clips in hand, Edelman says it’s best to send first-time ideas through postal mail, with your best writing samples attached.
