Garden Design is a glossy, photo-driven magazine for those who believe in the importance of beautiful gardens and gracious outdoor-living spaces. Because most of what is assigned to writers will also need to be photographed a year ahead of time, keep this in mind when pitching. The highest concentration of freelance-written articles is in Dirt, the front-of-the-book department. It's a mix of plant and designer profiles, book reviews, essays, products, art exhibits, events at botanical gardens, and outdoor-furniture designs from all over the country. Staff editors take the lead on writing and packaging most of what is in the feature well, so it is mostly off limits to freelancers. Style (which covers furnishings) is typically written by a staff editor, as is Décor (all about exteriors). In general, do not send photos or descriptions of gardens that are, for lack of a better word, ugly. Because Garden Design has such a small editorial staff -- split between offices in Northern California, New York and the company's Winter Park, FL headquarters -- it's best to e-mail your query so that it can be shared quickly among editors.
