Live in the city of Angels and want to highlight the non-Hollywood side of town? Los Angeles has built itself quite a reputation of late: "In five years, the magazine has been nominated for four National Magazine Awards; before [editor Kit] Rachlis' tenure, the magazine hadn't received a single nomination," writes Jill Singer. It's hard to break into, but possible by knowing the magazine backwards and front. "Find an interesting and surprising way to tell a story that will illuminate a subculture, a ritual, or something that you didn't know about in L.A.," says executive editor Mary Melton. Check out the "Buzz," "Au Courant" and "Geographia," sections, and keep away from stories about celebrities and upcoming movies.
