How to Pitch Mini-Bonanza

nypaw22.jpgWant to pitch the New York Post @ Work? Combining on-the-job coverage with a tabloidy tone, this weekly supplement puts freelancers to work. Almost all of the content is written by freelancers: Inside stories run about 750-800 words. "Moving Up" is where most service stories live. Whether it's a story about how to give a good handshake, things to do on your lunch break, or how not to behave at an office party, it's always good to suggest a 200-300 word sidebar with expert advice and the nuts and bolts takeaway info. "Water Cooler" is where the wacky, quirky items hang out. "Office Space" is home to most office culture and workplace culture stories. Get more info here.

Or how about Men's Journal? You can break into this man-focused monthly with health news or analysis. With about three-quarters of the book written by freelancers, there is a real opportunity for fresh voices in this magazine. As with most magazines, first-timers tend to do well pitching the front of the book. If you really feel the pulse of what Men's Journal is all about, give the "Adventure" section your best shot. Comprised mostly of one- to two-page travel pieces, "Adventure" stories run the gamut from easy getaways to the best place to take a safari. More info here.
