Get Better Quotes
Poynter advises you to spice up your quotations by learning the difference between quotes and dialogue, and how to use both. Journalism.org has a list of articles on the art of interviewing so long that I might as well just linked to all of them in this post. But they include "Using Email as a Reporting Tool", "Getting the Most from Your Interviews" and "Sure-fire Openers." Dan Gillmor, on a citizen journalist page, answers the question on how to conduct a good interview based on what he knows, which includes some additional links to other articles on the subject. Speaking of citizen journalists, apparently they're quoting from our conversations. Amy Gahran talks about what's cool and what's not. This article in the Columbia Journalism Review discusses how you can prevent an interviewee from turning an interview into a public relations stunt. |
