Keeping Busy When Work Slows Down, Part III

skatem.jpgWhy do I keep posting the Kristi Yamaguchi picture? Because I know how, darn it! My MBToolbox stint is almost over, and I still haven’t mastered photos. Good thing Claire comes back soon.
But I digress.
I’ve been really busy this year, and that’s a high-class problem for a freelancer to have. The downside is that I have not had a chance to do the good strategic thinking that I can do when I’m slow. If you are not as busy as you want to be, take the time to dream about your business and get set up for the next level.
1) Write or update your business plan. List your income goals, the publications you want to break into, the skills or credentials you need to get those dream assignments, and the next physical steps you will take to reach your goals.
2) Clean out your files. Upgrade your accounting system. Set up templates for queries and stories. These tasks take time, but they pay off.
3) Get out and attend trade shows, show up at luncheon meetings, and network. You never know who is going to give you a great idea or a perfect job lead, but I can assure you that it won’t be your dog.
