When an article is written about Canadians’ lack of mathematical skills, that means Americans certainly can’t be faring much better. Because we’re dumb. That’s why.
Your average journalist isn’t known for his or her razor-sharp math skills, which might be why we’re so poor (because we always end up overpaying when we go out to dinner with our friends.) The Toronto Star goes into further detail about why it’s bad, not just irritating, when journalists don’t know their numbers.
