On the Road with Liza Monroy

liza_monroy.jpgLiza Monroy was just interviewed for The Urban Muse, and since she’s prolific and successful, she had a lot to say. We’ve known her since she started taking classes with us just a couple years ago, and she’s gone on to publish personal essays in The New York Times‘ Modern Love and Lives columns, quit her day job, get a deal for her novel, and, oh yeah, teach for us.
In the interview, Liza talks about writing and selling personal essays, her forthcoming memoir, and juggling projects. Here’s an excerpt:

Urban Muse: Could you tell us about your newest project and the writer’s residency?

Liza: I’m the writer-in-residence at the Kerouac Project of Orlando this summer. It is an amazing experience that I’d recommend to writers everywhere. You spend three whole months with time and space in the glorious Orlando home where Jack Kerouac lived when On the Road was published in 1957. He also wrote Dharma Bums in the back bedroom — my current writing office! It’s a hauntingly beautiful place and I’m getting more done than I ever have — the productivity that comes with solitude and an inspiring environment.
