Don't Get Testy!

exam.bmpWriters can make extra bucks writing test questions to torture wanna-be college and grad school applicants. If you're thinking about doing this, I've rounded up a few sites that offer advice on how to write the best brain-melters:

"How to Write Better Tests" is kind of dense but offers good, basic tips that beginners would need, like "Make sure there is only one correct or best response." That sounds a lot easier than it is.

"Designing Test Questions" is more for teachers than for writers, but it contains this little interesting nugget: "Make more false than true (60/40). (Students are more likely to answer true.)"

Teaching Today offers more tips on little errors to avoid, like "avoid confusing students with too many negatives in a question. (e.g., What might not have happened had the Allies not won the war?). Unless they appear on a grammar or logic test, these items rarely test content knowledge. They also may skew the test unfairly toward native English speakers and highly proficient readers."

If you don't know where to start, look at some sample tests. The ACT provides several online.
