Introducing the 2007 Eric Butterman Internship Scholarship

gradscol.jpgI was sent this by Eric Butterman, former editor for Folio: and Travel Agent. Eric Butterman has written for Glamour, Men's Fitness, ESPN.com and numerous others and been a magazine writing instructor for everyone from staff editors of O, The Oprah Magazine and Country Living to talented hopefuls looking to change fields. He wanted me to spread the word of his generous scholarship--so pass it on to any interested potentials.

Fact: Every year, college students from around the country are limited in the New York City summer internships they apply for or don't apply for any due to financial difficulty. Because internships are vital to securing jobs after graduation, this disadvantage is more than unfortunate-it can stall a promising magazine journalism career right in its tracks. Consider this a "de-stalling."

Announcing the 2007 Eric Butterman Internship Scholarship, a $1,000 offering to be strictly used for a New York City magazine summer internship. Here are the rules:

Beginning July 1st, any undergraduate journalism major can apply provided they won't graduate before the end of the 2007 Spring semester (must have proof of college standing if requested). All applications must be emailed by December 1st and include a pasted:

500-word essay detailing why you feel you deserve this scholarship. And, yes, the quality of your writing will be part of the decision process, considered in this case to be a far greater indicator of your scholarship than GPA. You must also paste one piece of journalism you wrote below the essay. It doesn't have to be for any college or professional publication; it can just be something you did on your own. The email must be sent to buttermanscholarship@yahoo.com. Any emails containing attachments will not be accepted as an application and finalists will do a phone interview with writer and media consultant Eric Butterman to help determine the winner. Please include your name, university, when you were officially recognized as a journalism major, phone number, email address, GPA and any applicable organizations you belong to in the application email. The right is reserved to only consider the first 500 applicants if the response is deemed too large.

Important: on the honor system, you must need this scholarship. If your family is well off and would front you the money needed for an internship then you should not apply for this. There will be no financial background checks, the assumption being that this is a scholarship you need. Please do not ruin this for the students who truly deserve this opportunity. Your family also can't have a residence within 150 miles of New York City. The main cost of a New York City internship is housing-if you already have it, you don't need this scholarship.

You must have a GPA of at least 2.0 to apply and maintain it up to the time the scholarship check is cut. Again, not looking for straight-A students, but you must not be in danger of flunking out. You also must have proof of the internship for the check to be cut-that means contact information of the magazine you'll be working for so that it can be verified. The scholarship winner will be determined by March 1, 2007 and the check will be cut May 1 if the winner can confirm they have a New York City magazine summer internship. If you haven't secured the internship at that point, you will be granted an extension until May 31. However, if for some reason you are not able to secure the internship by May 31 then you will be disqualified and the scholarship will go to the first runner-up who has qualified for a New York City summer magazine internship. Hopefully, saying you won the scholarship will help you to secure a better internship, not be left without one.

Good luck and please pass this on to any college administrator who you feel would like to post this on their university Web site.
